PhD Position in Finance, University of Konstanz, Germany

FP7 Marie-Curie Initial Training Network Risk Management and Risk Reporting Position: Early Stage Researcher/PhD Placement Project Title: Interbank Lending and Bank Risk Measure Project Description: The Early Stage Researcher (ESR) in this project will work on measures to restore the interbank markets that are crucial for banks' liquidity management, but mostly dried up during the crisis. The current external risk reporting of banks lacks credibility because the reported values at risk (VaR) turned out to be very small in relation to the reported depreciations on bank assets. The project is divided in several steps. The first step is to find out why the reported VaR were so misleading; is it because the underlying stochastic models are ignoring systemic risks, or because the time horizon of the underlying model is too short? Second, can VaR be sufficiently improved to credibly communicate a bank's risk? If not, can stress tests be designed for that purpose? A more demanding approach is to combine different pieces of information that banks publish, which taken separately, might be insufficient, but when put together may be sufficient information for interbank lending. This requires research on the synergies of different pieces of information and empirical testing. This research should be of a theoretical and empirical nature. Third, the issue of quick changes in banks' risk through derivatives trading needs to be addressed. Should banks report these big trades or should such trades be restricted to banks with stricter equity capital requirements? Fourth, the ESR should differentiate systematic and non-systematic risk factors in bank risk positions to provide more precise insights into potential damages of lending to another bank. Proposed Start Date: September 2009 subject to finalisation of the contract Duration: 36 months Financial Information: Salary plus allowances in line with Marie Curie FP7 requirements for ESRs. Host Institution: Konstanz University Academic Advisor: Professor Guenter Franke Secondment 1: Erasmus University Rotterdam - 4 months Secondment 2: Deutsche Bundesbank, McKinsey or Credit Suisse - 4 months, subject to confirmation Eligibility: Nationals or residents of Germany cannot apply. At the time of appointment, applicants should have no more than 4 years experience (FTE) after graduation and should not have resided in the host country for more than 12 months in the last 3 years immediately before appointment. PhD Opportunities at ETH Zurich, Switzerland

Computational Seismology (contact person: Dr. Lapo Boschi - lapo@... ) We seek a highly motivated Ph.D. candidate at ETH Zurich to be working withinthe newly funded European Marie-Curie training network QUEST in the domain of computational seismology. This network comprises 14 partner institutions, and guarantees a unique basis for fruitful and innovative research through vigorous scientific exchange, workshops, and industrial internships. QUEST revolves around the seismic inverse problem, i.e. deducing viable earth models from seismic data. Modern approaches solve the seismic wave equation via sophisticated numerical methods and high-performance computing facilities. Our proposed research project engages in such techniques in order to constrain the structure of the deep earth, core-mantle boundary region, and core. Of specific interest is the aspherical topography on sharp seismic interfaces: We expect the applicant to further develop forward and inverse modeling in this context, possibly combined with ideas from the exploration industry. This will result in more coherent and refined images of these discontinuities which is key to understanding and further constraining the geomagnetic field and thermal evolution of the earth. Applicants must hold a M. Sc., Diploma or equivalent in the geosciences, physics, applied mathematics, computer sciences or related field. Central to this project are strong analytical and quantitative skills in numerical analysis, programming, high-performance computing, and an interest in wave phenomena, inverse theory, data analysis, and global dynamics of the earth. A solid knowledge of English as the spoken and written language of work is mandatory. We expect good interpersonal skills, the ability to thrive in a diverse, multidisciplinary environment as much as the willingness to spend time at partner institutions, and to present at international conferences. The Institute of Geophysics at ETH Zurich boasts a strong research and teaching environment covering a wide array of disciplines. Please consult the Seismology and Geodynamics web pages, or contact Dr. Tarje Nissen-Meyer and Dr. Lapo Boschi for further information or any remaining questions. Complete applications must include a statement of scientific interests, curriculum vitae and contact details of two referees familiar with the academic ability of the candidate, and should be emailed to Dr. Boschi: lapo@... (electronic PDF format preferred), preferably by early September, 2009. the earliest starting date is January 2010, but no later than June 2010. ETH Zurich is an equal-opportunity and non-discriminating employer.

The following interdisciplinary areas or "clusters" are offering scholarships:

  1. The Changing Family in Asia (Research Leader: Prof Gavin Jones)

    This cluster explores the dimensions of family change in the region, their causes and their implications. These dimensions include rising ages at marriage, declining size of the nuclear family, increase in one-person households and alternative family forms, changing gender roles within families, and changes in family structures. They are studied in the context of the changing political-economic structures and changing state/family roles in provision of services and support.

  2. The Migration Cluster (Research Leader: Professor Brenda Yeoh) explores the issues arising from increased levels of human mobility in the region, both within and across national borders. Mobility of high-level professional and managerial personnel, labour migration, both documented and undocumented, and human trafficking all raise theoretical and methodological questions and major policy issues, as does the role of migration in urban change.
  3. The Religion and Globalisation Cluster (Research Leader: Professor Bryan Turner) explores the changing patterns of religious practice, belief and identity in recent times, particularly in Southeast Asia, China and South Asia. The title implies a particular interest in transnational and diasporic interactions, the engagement with modern technologies and values, and new global or ‘glocal’ forms of identity.
  4. The Cultural Studies Cluster (Research Leader: Professor Chua Beng Huat) consciously challenges disciplinary boundaries to address new topics, issues and concerns thrown up by the rapid globalization of contemporary cultures. ARI is interested in new understandings of the everyday life cultural practices of contemporary Asia, as in adaptations of older patterns in literature, and the performing and graphic arts, in rapidly changing contemporary conditions.
  5. The Southeast Asia-China Interactions Cluster (Research Leader: Professor Anthony Reid) will welcome students in two project areas: The Cold War in Asia, relating particularly to relations between the two Chinas (CCP and KMT) and the parties, movements and governments of Southeast Asia; and issues of heritage recovery and archaeology in Aceh and Sumatra more generally.
  6. The Asian Cities Cluster (Research Leaders: Prof Heng Chye Kiang & Prof Chua Beng Huat) is housed in School of Design and Environment (SDE), Department of Architecture (NUS). This cluster focuses especially on cutting-edges areas of rapid change and the identity of Asia cities, notably including: the impact of rapid urbanization, adapting and conserving heritage to a changing urban environment, and urban environmental planning. It will build collaborative and interdisciplinary connections among the colleagues from the Humanities and Social Science faculties in NUS.

ARI is a university-level institute formed in July 2001 as one of the strategic initiatives of the NUS. The mission of the Institute is to produce and promote world-class research on Asia. ARI engages the social sciences and humanities broadly defined, and encourages especially multidisciplinary studies. Now home to six research clusters with a strong team of resident and visiting scholars, ARI works closely with the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, School of Business, Faculty of Law, and School of Design and Environment in NUS.

Mari Belajar Huruf Kanji Jepang

The Kanji Readings, Meanings & Examples 一

1) ichi, 2) hito(tsu) - one, the first [LINK]

And so begins your kanji journey and it couldn't be any easier! (and believe me it won't!) 一 ichi - one, the number one 一番 ichi ban – #1, the best 世界一 sei kai ichi - the best in the world 一人 hitori - one person, alone 二

1) ni, 2) futa(tsu) – two, second [LINK]

Two lines = 2, logical!; A little harder, but don't run for the aspirin yet! 二 ni - two 第二 dai ni - the second 二月 ni gatsu - February [the 2nd month] 三

1) san, 2) mi(tsu) – three, third [LINK]

Three lines = 3, still logical!; Hang in there… 三 san - three 三角 san kaku - triangle 三月 san gatsu - March [the 3rd month] 四

1) shi, 2) yon, 3) yo(tsu) – four, fourth [LINK]

Ok this is where logic fails, but don't panic! Just think of 2 little legs dangling in a FOUR sided box. 四 yon or shi - four 四級 yon kyuu - 4th grade 四月 shi gatsu - April [the 4th month] 五

1) go, 2) itsu(tsu) – five, the fifth [LINK]

This is modern art. 五 is an artist's impression of the number 5. [well, it kind of looks like the number!] 五 go - five 五月 go gatsu - May [the 5th month] 五ヶ月 go ka getsu - 5 months [note: So far we have seen that adding a number between 1-12 with \'gatsu\' makes the month\'s names. But here is how to say a duration of months: # + ka + getsu - notice it is \'getsu\' not \'gatsu\'] 六

1) roku, 2) mu(tsu), 3) mui - six, the sixth [LINK]

A picture of a man stretching his hands and legs is the character for '6′ 六 roku - six 六日 mui ka - the 6th of the month [I hesitate to introduce this, but instead of counting ichi, ni, san... for the first 10 days of the month they use other pronunciations! But don\'t let this get to you. If you have to, you can just say, \"roku nichi\" (6 day) and will probably be understood] 六月 roku gatsu - June [the 6th month] 七

1) shichi, 2) nana(tsu), 3) nano- seven, the seventh [LINK]

A diagonal line through an 'L' means 7 七 shichi or nana - seven 七不思議 nana fushigi - the seven wonders 七月 shichi gatsu - July [the 7th month] 八

1) hachi , 2) ya(tsu), 3) you - eight, the eighth [LINK]

If you have studied katakana (one of the Japanese 'alphabets'), you will notice this is the same as 'ha.' So hachi = 8 八 hachi -eight 八年間 hachi nen kan - 8 years 八月 hachi gatsu - August [the 8th month] 九

1) kyuu, 2) ku, 3) kokono(tsu) – nine, the ninth [LINK] 九 kyuu or ku - nine 九ヵ月 ku ka getsu - 9 months 九月 ku gatsu - September [the 9th month] 十 1) juu, 2) ju + a small tsu (a short pause), 3) to, 3) tou - ten [LINK]Remember: 5 + 5 = + 2 hands crossing each other, with 5 fingers on each hand, is 10 十 juu - ten十九 juu kyuu – 19 [lit. 10 & 9] 九十 kyuu juu - 90 [lit. 9 & 10] 十二月 juu ni gatsu - December [the 12th month] 百 1) hyaku – a hundred, one hundred [LINK]Remember the line over & the number of lines inside the box – that can save some confusion later! 二百 ni hyaku - 200 三百 san byaku - 300 [note: sound changes to a harder \'b\' sound 千 1) sen, 2) chi - a thousand [LINK]It looks like a 10 [十] with a slanted line over it. Think of the line as adding an extra 0: 1000 一千円 issen en - 1000 yen [the 一 ichi becomes \'iss\' because it is easier to say than \'ichisen.\' Also yen is pronounced \'en\'] 三千二百 san sen ni hyaku - 3,200 二千年 ni sen nen - the year 2000, 2 millennium 万 1) ban, 2) man – ten thousand (10,000) [LINK]The next in numbers. add another 0 百万 hyaku man - a million (1,000,000) [100 &10,000] 一万円 ichi man en - 10,000 yen (about $100 US) 万歳 ban zai - hurrah! banzai! hooray! [usually said 3 times in a row] 父 1) fu, 2) chichi, 3) tou – father, dad [LINK]It looks like a father tying his tie お父さん o tou san - a father 父の日 chichi no hi - Father's Day 父親 chichi oya - father 母 1) bo, 2) haha, 3) kaa – mother, mom [LINK]Think of a mother holding 2 babies close to her お母さん okaa san - a mother, mommy 母の日 haha no hi - Mother's Day 保母 ho bo - a kindergarten teacher, a nurse 友 1) yuu, 2) tomo – a friend [LINK] 友達 tomo dachi - friends, a friend 友情 yuu jou - friendship 友好国 yuu kou koku - a friendly nation 女 1) jo, 2) onna - a woman, women, female [LINK]Think of a woman dancing 彼女 kano jo - 1) her, 2) girlfriend 女の子 onna no ko - a girl 女優 jo yuu - an actress 男 1) dan, 2) otoko – a man, men, male [LINK]The top part 田 means 'rice field' & 力 means 'power.' So a powerful man works in the rice field. [You haven\'t learned those 2 kanji yet, but I just wanted to show that most kanji are made of other kanji parts] 男女 dan jo - men & women 男らしい otoko rashi - manly, like a man 雪男 yuki otoko - the abominable snowman 人 1) jin, 2) nin, 3) hito - person, people, man [LINK]A very important kanji! Scholarships at INSA Lyon, France and Ranplan Wireless Network Design Ltd.- UK

In the framework of the iPLAN European project the aim of this thesis is to enhance the computational efficiency and to adjust the complexity-accuracy trade-off of the MR-FDPF (Multi-Resolution Frequency Domain Partial Flows) method for indoor radio coverage prediction. This method, particularly efficient for indoor propagation, is devoted to be implemented in a radio network planning tool. This tool needs to propose all kind of modern radio link conditions: indoor, outdoor, indoor to outdoor, outdoor to indoor, for 3G/4G, WLAN or WMAN (WiMax), from macrocells to femtocells. Thus, the study will contain four main parts:
  • computational efficiency enhancement of the MR-FDPF method;
  • implementation of statistical analysis of radio channel behaviour rather than only considering mean power level;
  • integration of our indoor propagation tool into a wide areas simulation tool with other propagation methods such as ray-tracing in collaboration with other partners;
  • measurement campaigns and model calibration.
The PhD candidate will work the first year in the CITI Lab of INSA Lyon in order to propose all possible enhancements on the MR-FDPF method and will be associated to the SWING INRIA project team (at INSA Lyon, France). Then he will spend two years seconded in Ranplan Wireless Network Design Ltd, partnet of the iPLAN project (located in Luton, UK). Ranplan`s R&D department is expected to launch an automatic planning tool, and the results of this work will contribute to this innovating tool. References:
